Watts-Dunton, Walter Theodore

Watts-Dunton, Walter Theodore
(1832-1914)
The eldest child of a solicitor, of St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, he went to school in Cambridge, then became a solicitor in London. From 1874 he worked for two years as literary critic for the Examiner, after which he joined the staff of the Athenæum as chief poetry reviewer. His wrote a critical essay for the 9th edition (1885) of the Encyclopædia Britannica. He supported Dante Gabriel Rossetti in his declining years, and Algernon Charles Swinburne (see entries), who would certainly have died much sooner had not Watts-Dunton taken him to live with him. In addition to his poetry, he is known for his work with gypsies, told in his romantic novel the Coming of Love (1898), and his best-known novel, Aylwin (1898). His memoir, Old Familiar Faces (1916), is a valuable record of his life and times. Two of his other poetry publications: Jubilee Greeting at Spithead to the Men of Greater Britain, 1897. The Work of Cecil Rhodes: A Sonnet Sequence, 1907. Some of his poems: "Coleridge," "For the Shelley Centenary," "Mother Carey's Chicken," "The Death of Marlowe," "The First Kiss," "The Sonnet's Voice."
